The process of creating is of great significance for Daijro Hama (1984). Those who visited Asia Now in 2018 might have had the chance to see the massive cloud of daily works that were presented. Hundreds of small, canvas-paper studies, Daijiro’s inner world, put together on a wall.
This year we are thrilled to present his first solo show in Paris: Mutation.
We also see a Mutation in Daijiro’s recent technique. For his Paris exhibition he started using colour to emphasize the monochrome origin of his work.
Besides artworks on canvas, he also presents work on paper and a sculpture.

"To express what is inside me, I use my technique and subjects such as Kūkan and Puman. Aesthetics, directions and stories. The road to get there can be joyful, but also frightening and a struggle."

The Kūkan series
The works Harmony and Kūkan are part of the Kūkan series. They belong to the same universe, although Kūkan is more structured and resembles the earth, and Harmony is movement, more like the wind.
Looking at both the Kūkan series and Puman one could say that Kūkan is macro - the space - and Puman micro, a magnified part of that. Puman is merely a detail of the astral. -
Shimane prefecture is a magical place full of shrines and with a solid base of ancient legends. Situated in the south of Japan, somewhat above Hiroshima, it is the place where Daijiro Hama (1984) had his yōkai (monsters) fuelled childhood and where he learned about legends that would stick with him forever.
For years, drawing was a part of his life just as eating breakfast was. While creating monsters, he fantasized about a career as an antique dealer and even went to Canada for 5 years to pursue this dream. It was only there that he realized that his urge to draw was more than just a habit.

The Story of Daijiro Hama
Interview with Daijiro Hama"As a kid I didn’t even know something like art school existed! But later, my image of studying there wasn’t helping either. I had the idea of art school as a place with rules to follow and as “doing what you are being told”.
I didn’t want to become part of a system. I was flooded with inspiration and I wanted to create things just by myself."
