KunstRAI Amsterdam 2026 April 22 — 26

For its second participation, Sato Gallery presents a tightly curated selection of works, built around key pieces — some rarely seen, others marking an important evolution in the artists’ practice.

The selection brings together six artists: Hiroshi Nagai, Takeru Amano, LY, Ken Yashiki, Samy San and Shun Okada. Between the silent landscapes of Takeru Amano’s Roadscape series, Hiroshi Nagai’s 1980s originals, and brand-new, previously unseen series, this hang reflects the full diversity and energy of our program.

Rather than a broad hang, we chose to focus on a few strong works, each carrying its own particular intention.

For this edition, Sato Gallery brings together EXCALIBUR, Takeru Amano, Hiroshi Nagai, LY and Ken Yashiki, whose practices offer complementary perspectives on contemporary Japanese creation.

The works on view draw on digital culture, pop references, urban landscapes and reinterpretations of traditional techniques. Together, they sketch a plural vision of contemporary Japan and show how its visual imagination continues to evolve and engage in dialogue with the world.

PRIVATE VIEW TAKERU AMANO

20 FEBRUARY – 22 FEBRUARY 2026

Sato Gallery presents Takeru Amano’s new works at a private viewing for collectors and friends of the gallery.

In this new series, Amano revisits his recurring figures — Venus, floral motifs — within compositions in motion, built through rhythm, light and shadow. The classical figure becomes here a space for contemporary pictorial research.

For the first time in Paris, this presentation is joined by the works of Minami Yoshida and Takuya Yoshida. Their practices meet around intimacy and memory. Minami Yoshida’s ceramics evoke the gesture of protection and shelter, while Takuya Yoshida’s painting explores sensation and memory through layers and diffuse colour. Mathilde Danglade’s works extend this reflection through textile and collage, in assemblages of sewn and recomposed fabric carrying traces and temporalities.

Finally, Suitou Nakatsuka presents works born from a word or a kanji, transformed into pictorial form. Her practice, nourished by calligraphy, moves toward an abstraction where gesture and rhythm take precedence over literal meaning…

HIGH AS DESERT NIGHTS

In a world that demands clarity, Yufi reminds us of the beauty of uncertainty — of what lives quietly between light and memory.

For her first solo exhibition at Sato Gallery, Yufi invites us into a space suspended between consciousness and unconsciousness — a liminal state where memories, dreams and sensations blur together.

Self-taught and free-spirited, Yufi paints more by intuition than by intention. Her practice moves fluidly between the visible and the invisible, translating unspeakable emotions into gradients of colour and light.

CLAVIERISME

“For me, creating is not a choice, but an organic necessity — a kind of excretion of the mind, an overflow that has to find its way out.” Sato Gallery welcomes Parisian artist Louise Tilleke.

Louise Tilleke paints, draws and films. Her work has been shown at Galerie Catherine Houard, Galerie RX, Galerie DX, Galerie Guillaume, Hôtel Costes, as well as at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains.

She was nominated for the Prix Marin, whose jury was chaired by David Hockney. Presented by Vladimir Veličković at the Institut de France, she was awarded the Prix Alphonse Cellier. Her works are now held in several public and private collections.

COEXISTENCE

COEXISTENCE — between self and other, past and present, visible and invisible.

In his new solo exhibition at Sato Gallery, COEXISTENCE, Daijiro Hama continues his exploration of the recurring figure that emerges from his inner world. Once solitary, this figure now appears alongside other presences, entering a space of relationship and sharing. At the heart of this exhibition lies Hama’s conviction that coexistence is not the erasure of differences, but the possibility for opposing forms, appearances and ideas to stand side by side — fragile, complex, yet carrying a quiet hope.

SOMEWHERE, IT'S STILL SUMMER

Sato Gallery is honoured to present the work of iconic Japanese artist Hiroshi Nagai on the occasion of his very first exhibition in France.

Known for his luminous skies, his tranquil coastlines and his eternal sunsets, Nagai captures the elusive beauty of summer like a dream that never fades. His work invites us into an idealised yet strangely familiar world, a sun-drenched and silent escape suspended between nostalgia and serenity.

Composed with cinematic precision and bathed in perfectly balanced, luminous colour, his scenes have become timeless icons of Japanese pop culture and of our collective visual memory.

On the occasion of the 40th edition of Kunstrai Amsterdam, Sato Gallery makes its first appearance with a bold ambition: to create an artistic dialogue between the contemporary Japanese scene and the Dutch scene. By bringing together artists from both worlds, we want to explore how cultural influences meet, transform and enrich one another.

Japan, with its aesthetics, its philosophy and its relationship to symbol, has always exerted a fascination that crosses borders. Through this selection, we highlight how this inspiration resonates within contemporary Dutch creation, and how Japanese artists, in turn, appropriate Western codes and references to reinterpret them from a new angle.

Every year, Sato Gallery highlights the contemporary Japanese art scene through a selection of emerging and established artists known as “neo-urban.”

Free-spirited and steeped in urban culture, these artists develop their techniques in alternative spaces due to the strict restrictions placed on street art in Tokyo. This context fosters the emergence of a unique style, an approach that is also gaining popularity in Europe.

BLOOMING OF A HERITAGE

Group exhibition 17 April – 10 May 2025

“Heritage is a river — flowing through time, like pigment in water, in perpetual metamorphosis without ever being lost.”

Sato Gallery is delighted to announce a new group exhibition: Blooming of a Heritage. This exhibition celebrates the theme of “heritage,” exploring its many facets through the works of ten contemporary Japanese artists. Like the blossoming of spring, each work reinterprets heritage — cultural, technical or philosophical — giving it new meaning and artistic expression.

Organised by Sato Gallery and co-curated with guest curator Yuki Gomez, this exhibition offers visitors an inspiring journey where tradition meets the vibrant energy and creativity of each artist.

OBJECT with Samy San

Rotterdam 14–16 February 2025

OBJECT is a unique pop-up platform for design labels as well as limited editions and one-offs from established and upcoming designers. Working in different design disciplines and with various materials, OBJECT is thé place where the cutting edge between design, crafts, fashion, architecture and art becomes evident and it is a must see for people interested in interior, designlovers, art professionals and collectors. Every year OBJECT occupies an iconic building in or around Rotterdam, the designers are present for a personal meet and greet.

METABIT by EXCALIBUR

THE ADVENTURE BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE UNREAL

7–29 December 2024

Three years after the success of their first Paris exhibition “NEW GAME+”, the EXCALIBUR collective returns for an exciting new chapter! This December, join them at Sato Gallery to discover METABIT: The Adventure Between the Real and the Virtual — an immersive exhibition that challenges the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds.

Inspired by the structure of a video game, METABIT unfolds across several “stages,” opening with a Prologue that introduces the METABIT universe, followed by five interactive stages, and closing with an Epilogue inviting everyone to reflect on this unique journey. Each room reveals a new facet of EXCALIBUR’s pixelated art, where the pixel — the fundamental unit of the digital image — moves across the interface between the real and the virtual.

Following the wonderful edition of Asia Now, we are currently exhibiting several works by Daijiro in our gallery at 58 Rue Charlot. Come visit us if you missed the fair or want to once again explore this artist’s captivating universe.

Surreal and conceptual, Daijiro’s work often tells a story — sometimes explicit, sometimes mysterious, always open to imagination. His works stir in us an emotion, a movement, a unique sensation.

Asia Now 2024

SOLO SHOW OF DAIJIRO HAMA

Paris – Monnaie de Paris 17–20 October 2024
 

We are thrilled to present Daijiro Hama with a solo show at Asia Now 2024. 

At first glance, his art may seem minimalistic, but a closer look reveals a hidden depth and complexity. Conceptual, his work always tells a story, sometimes explicit, sometimes leaving room for imagination. What is certain is that his work provokes something in us: an emotion, a movement, a particular sensation.

Daijiro Hama often references an almost primitive character in his work, which he describes as a self-portrait but also as a mirror for the viewer. This character, born from his inner exploration, reflects aspects of his personality that he must accept despite his reluctance. For Daijiro, the process of creation is an integration of experiences, both internal and external. He compares this process to making a toy, an activity that is both joyful and sometimes frightening.

Natsukashi | Group Exhibition

Brussels (Sato Gallery x Mazel Gallerie) 19 September – 26 October 2024

For the group exhibition “Natsukashii,” Mazel Gallery invited Sato Gallery to join with some of its most talented Japanese artists.

Natsukashii is a Japanese term with no direct equivalent in English. The closest word might be “nostalgia,” but that refers to a wistful longing to return to a past time, whereas “Natsukashii” evokes the pleasure of fondly remembering happy moments.

Around fifteen artists, both Japanese and Western, are invited to share the exhibition space. It will be interesting to observe the creative and cultural exchanges, as well as the points of convergence and divergence.

Japan may seem very distant to Western eyes, yet it is omnipresent in our culture, to the point of becoming an integral part of it. Judo, manga, anime, sushi, origami, matcha and many other elements are now part of our everyday lives and enrich our memories. More specialised concepts such as umami (the fifth taste) and kawaii (cute) have even become fairly common terms in Europe.

FREE MONSTERS

The exhibition “Free Monsters” explores the idea that nothing is ever truly free. What may seem free at first glance, and is presented as such, is never entirely so.

The Dutch expression “gratis monsters,” meaning “free sample,” inspired Jannes to dig deeper into the idea of “Free Monsters.” How can something be free when so much effort goes into creating it?

And what are people willing to do to get a “free monster”? If Jannes offers something, perhaps the interested party could offer something in return.

Our digital presence perpetuates itself indefinitely, symbolising the living’s struggle with the concept of mortality.

The exhibition NEW VOID draws on the theme of “vanitas,” a symbolic representation of death found in 17th- and 18th-century still-life paintings from the Netherlands and Flanders. In a contemporary age where every event is documented through the quiet surveillance of social media and the fragmented generation of AI, the traditional concept of death has evolved.

BREATH INTO THE CARTRIDGE

Sato Gallery Paris 16 MAY – 13 JUNE 2024

Shun Okada, born in 1992 in Tōkai, discovered art during his high school years, a period marked by dropping out of school. He spent his time playing video games, watching anime and drawing his favourite characters.

He went on to study at an art school in Tokyo, where he developed a unique approach: reproducing glitched screens, notably those of the NES (Famicom).

Sato Gallery is delighted to present Mayumi Nakao’s first solo exhibition in Europe: “Sweet Memories.”

The charm of Mayumi’s work lies in the narrative warmth it radiates. Her own sense of loneliness, felt when she moved from Japan to the United States, was profoundly transformed when she discovered her New York friends’ family photographs.

In his first solo exhibition titled “Iro Iro,” Daijiro Hama celebrates the enchantment found in the unique combinations and interactions of colours, creating both collective harmony and individual magic.

Through this exhibition in Rotterdam, Daijiro Hama explores the individuality of every existing element, emphasising that each entity has distinct characteristics — habits, traits, size and colour. He highlights the importance of the word “iro” (colour, in Japanese) in expressing the varied conditions of objects, or “iro iro.”

“In pixels, Tokyo becomes a potential playground for gaming. We call it Ukiyo.e.”

Picture Tokyo in pixels, and you’ll have a glimpse of EXCALIBUR’s universe — an artist collective founded in 2007 in Tokyo by Yoshinori Tanaka. EXCALIBUR’s art is heavily influenced by 1980s Nintendo graphic aesthetics and the golden age of video games.

The collective uses the 8-bit pixel, typical of games from that era, as its foundation, giving its works a strong sense of nostalgia.

“Nature always offers us something, but never the same thing twice: a Zen philosophy illustrated by the art it inspires. This time, it takes the form of pixels, digital and movement.”

From September 19 to October 23, Sato Gallery presents its third off-site exhibition at La Samaritaine, Paris, spotlighting Japanese artist collective EXCALIBUR.

The La Samaritaine building and Japan share a subtle yet deep connection through Art Nouveau. This artistic movement, influenced by Japonism and its woodblock prints, arrived in Europe at the end of the 19th century and quickly captured the collective imagination.

La Samaritaine, which embraced this trend, has featured a flamboyant Art Nouveau facade and interior since 1904.

Contemporary Japanese artists showcased in the historic centre of Avignon.

From July 11 to 24, during the Festival d’Avignon — the world-famous theatre festival — Sato Gallery presents a group exhibition featuring four Japanese artists and one French artist in the charming setting of the Académie des Arts d’Avignon, ideally located in the heart of the city.

2021 is a special year for Takeru Amano, marking the 20th anniversary of his career as a painter. Twenty years ago, he held his first solo exhibition — not in Tokyo, but in Beijing.

From June 9 to 20, we celebrate this artistic odyssey by immersing ourselves in another galaxy with an exhibition titled “2021: A Space Odyssey.”

MUTATION

Could it be that each of us harbours a Puman? Or is this a result of the world’s recent upheavals?

The creative process is fundamental for Daijiro Hama (b. 1984). Those who visited the Asia Now exhibition in 2018 may have had the chance to see a vast series of his works: hundreds of small pieces on canvas, depicting his inner world, displayed across a wall.
